Circa 1900 English Majolica Swan Finial Sardine Box

Circa 1900 English Majolica Swan Finial Sardine Box

A charming and unusual English majolica sardine box and cover dating to circa 1900.

The rectangular vessel is richly glazed in deep cobalt blue and raised upon four wonderfully sculptural fish form feet. A molded yellow border surrounds the opening, with each corner embellished by an applied aquatic detail.

The removable cover is decorated with a turquoise water surface and overlapping pale green lily pads, framed by cream and cobalt borders. A beautifully modeled swan forms the finial, its curved neck creating a natural handle for lifting the lid.

Majolica sardine boxes became fashionable additions to the Victorian dining table during the nineteenth century. These decorative covered dishes allowed preserved sardines, then considered a delicacy, to be served elegantly rather than presented in their commercial tins. Marine motifs such as fish, shells, water plants and waterfowl were traditionally incorporated into their designs.

The underside bears a hand painted numeral but no identifiable factory mark. Christie’s has documented this distinctive cobalt glazed form with fish feet and a swan finial as probably English and dating to circa 1900.

A delightful example of Victorian naturalistic majolica with vivid glazes, whimsical modeling and considerable decorative presence.

Mid Century Italian Golden Alabaster Box and Vase Set

Mid Century Italian Golden Alabaster Box and Vase Set

A sophisticated two piece Italian decorative set carved from beautifully coordinated golden alabaster, dating to the 1960s or 1970s.

The set comprises a rounded rectangular box and a sculptural bud vase. Both pieces display warm golden yellow coloring with softly clouded natural veining and contrasting black stone accents.

The box has a removable domed lid bordered by a narrow black band. The lid lifts away completely to reveal a smooth alabaster interior suitable for jewelry or keepsakes. The underside retains its original Genuine Alabaster Made in Italy label. The box measures 5 inches wide, 3.5 inches deep and 2.25 inches high.

The coordinating vase has a rounded bulbous body rising into a tall, gently waisted neck. A black stone rim encircles the opening and complements the dark detailing of the box. The vase measures 3.25 inches in diameter and 6.5 inches high.

Italian alabaster objects of this period were traditionally carved and finished in workshops surrounding Volterra, a region celebrated for its centuries old alabaster industry. The beautifully matched stone, restrained silhouettes and graphic black accents make this set especially striking when displayed together.

An elegant addition to a desk, vanity, bookshelf or cocktail table.
